Find a grave

Grave search

Find a grave at Ohlsdorf Cemetery yourself or commission GraveStay to provide photographs and exact coordinates.

On this page

Across 389 hectares, a name alone is rarely enough for a search on site. A useful location reference ideally includes the grid square, grave number and a nearby landmark. One grid square measures approximately 50 × 50 metres.

Finding a grave yourself

Hamburger Friedhöfe provides an electronic search covering around 400,000 deceased people at Ohlsdorf, Öjendorf, Volksdorf and Wohldorf. Always check which cemetery is named in the result.

  1. Search with the full first name and surname.
  2. Try spelling variants and birth names.
  3. Compare dates of birth and death.
  4. Save the complete grid square, grave number and nearest chapel.
  5. Open the cemetery map, then select the most convenient entrance or bus stop.

If the online search has no result

Contact the cemetery administration with the full name and, where possible, dates of birth and death. Historical or time-consuming archive enquiries may incur a fee. This independent guide does not operate an official grave register.

Before visiting: Save the location reference and PDF plan on your device. Western and eastern sections are several kilometres apart.
